MitID replaced NemID 2021
NemID was created in 2010 as part of a progressive digitization strategy, and at that point NemID was one of the first digital IDs in Europe.
NemID were closed down in October 2023, and can’t no more be utilized by a Danish citizen.
It was during 2021, eleven years after the launch of NemID the Danish Digitalization Agency (Danske Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) together with Finans Danmark developed MitID to address new challenges and provide an improved solution.
The goal is to ensure the national digital identity infrastructure of Denmark and provide the Danish society with a more resilient eID solution.
Although NemID has proven reliable for over a decade, the rapidly changing digital environment has introduced new challenges and requirements to ensure that Denmark's national digital identity framework can adequately meet these evolving needs, a thorough update and modernization of the eID solution became essential.
Denmark's Essential Digital Identity Solution
MitID was introduced to businesses and Danish citizens in May 2021, marking a significant transition from NemID to MitID. The migration process, which lasted six months from the summer of 2021 to the end of the year, ensured that public authorities and organizations supported both systems. This seamless approach allowed Danish citizens to gradually adapt to MitID.
Today, as a Danish citizen, you can utilize MitID for a wide range of services, including online banking and interactions with government agencies. MitID has become a natural part of daily life, significantly enhancing online security across the nation.
What does it mean to be a MitID broker?
In 2021, MitID was launched by the Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) in partnership with Finans Danmark, introducing the concept of MitID brokers to enhance its functionality.
